Chris Country is an online Country radio station broadcasting from the UK and in our humble opinion one of the absolute finest sources of fantastic non-stop Country music. Over the last two years the station has made every effort to feature a broad mix of Country music, you can expect to hear Nashville big-hitters such as Luke Bryan & Miranda Lambert, alongside the home-grown talents of the likes of Ward Thomas & The Shires. The station also finds a place for specialist shows, on Tuesday you can hear ‘The Main Street Bluegrass Show’, Wednesday gives you the chance to tune in to ‘The Texas Music Country Countdown’, whilst Saturday/Sunday sees the appearance of the legendary ‘Bob Kingsley’s Country Top 40’ which counts down the latest hit singles from the USA. All of this available online or via their super-nifty iPhone & android apps.
These are exciting times for Chris Country as they are part of a bid by digital group Listen2Digital to have 18 new stations launched nationwide. Using DAB+ technology this would mean that most car & portable radios purchased in the last few years will allow you to tune into Chris Country wherever you are, whenever you want. The station has made massive strides forwards in the last two years, welcoming artists such as Eric Church & Kacey Musgraves on air as well as partnering with the likes of Yeehaw UK Country Festival. Were this bid to be successful it would be huge news not only for Chris Country but also for UK Country music fans everywhere.
Of the bid station founder Chris Stevens rightly says ‘Country music has never been more popular in the UK, and we think a national service could be incredibly successful. As well as the many Country fans living here, we believe that many more people would love the genre if they discovered it on their radio‘. Hitting the nail right on the head there, one of the largest ‘problems’ faced by Country music in the UK is actually gaining access to it. Hidden away, struggling for exposure is a genre of music ready to be embraced by a far wider audience in the UK. The situation is improving, and in the time that Chris Country has been on air the likes of the Country To Country Festival have accelerated these steps forward. Having Chris Country as a nationwide digital UK-based 24/7 Country music station surely is the next logical progression.
NCUK wishes Chris Country all the very best of luck with this bid, as they wait for Listen2Digital’s proposal to be accepted by UK radio regulator Ofcom. We are keeping all of our fingers (& toes!) crossed that when Chris Stevens muses ‘the ease of being able to switch the radio on in your car or home and instantly getting country music? It’s what our radio dials need‘, we are able to agree with him soon whilst tuning in to Chris Country.
